DEBUNK Stereotypes Project

speech-question-marksWhat is a stereotype?

A stereotype is a type of logical oversimplification in which all the members of a class or set are considered to be definable by an easily distinguishable set of characteristics. The term is often used with a negative connotation, as stereotypes can be used to deny individuals respect or legitimacy based on their membership in a particular group. In America, the term has long been associated with the Civil Rights movement and is imbued with a semblance of racial context.

Stereotypes often form the basis of prejudice and are usually employed to explain real or imaginary differences due to race, gender, religion, age, weight, ethnicity, socio-economic class, disability, and occupation, among the limitless groups one may be identified with. A stereotype can be a conventional and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image based on the belief that there are attitudes, appearances, or behaviors shared by all members of a group. Stereotypes are forms of social consensus rather than individual judgments. Stereotypes are sometimes formed by a previous illusory correlation, a false association between two variables that are loosely correlated if correlated at all. Finally, stereotypes can be associated to cognitive bias and in particular the attributional bias, and to cognitive simplification (labeling).

Another Stereotype to debunk.

Many people who have never visited Algeria ignore how Algeria is nice and how its people are so hospitable. It is true that many sad circumstances have prevailed some time before, but Algeria is on its feet. Many people refer just to the media and think  that our country is simply  a “country ” located somewhere in Africa. That’s not true.

Let’s discover Algeria together and show to those people that they are wrong because Algeria is a “paradise”.

Now if you have visited Algeria or if one of your kins have, please do send your message and say what you think.

Here is a witness brought by an honest American citizen:

Per our discussion the other day regarding the Algerian people. I must say I have been very impressed with Algerian people and am disappointed at some people who have a very closed mind due to the media. All country’s have “bad apples”, America, UK, China, etc, and often what prevails is what the media gives attention and people who are not educated or do have an open mind will believe all that the media presents.

The Algerian people are very loving and  family oriented culture, a culture that many of the “others” should take notice of. I have met people here in Algeria that I am very proud to call my friends and will be friends for life.

Another stereotype to debunk

– It is true that the overwhelming majority of the young Algerians are very “hot” when they discuss any subject.

– Many of them use the “body language”, I mean they make a lot of gestures.

– That is why too many people believe that the Algerians are violent and dangerous when addressed. This is not true, it is a stereotype to debunk.
